It’s here!!! Today is a very emotional day for us. As diaspora kids, we never had a collection of books that represented our unique lives. This is our attempt to change that. We are putting our faith in the community to support our dream. We truly believe that together we can bring Thamizh into our children's lives in a fun and engaging way. We can expand our own libraries too. Unity is the Thamizh community’s superpower. We intentionally launched on Tamil Heritage Month to make a point. As we said before, you are not buying a book, you are part of a movement. A movement that shows the world that Thamizhs matter. A movement that shows that we can all choose to be as Thamizh as we want to be. Let’s Keep Thamizh moving because “naanum Tamizh thaan.”

Meet Amutha

Hi my name is Amutha and I am a six year old Thamizh girl.

I'm lucky enough to have a big family who are loving and supportive and I can't wait for you to meet them all in my first book. I was brought to life by three Thamizh women who believed that the world needed me, a young curious Thamizh girl who is eager to learn more about the world that she lives in. These women realized that Thamizh children deserve a friend who they could relate to and learn from. I am learning too and I know that there are many adults out there who are eager to learn Thamizh as well. Please come join me in this adventure (@amuthalearns) and see how my very first Thamizh children's book comes to life. We'll discover more about the richness of the language as well as look at how we can be more inclusive in the way we embrace the differences between us.

About Us

We are three Thamizh women who go by the name Fearless Avvaiyar. We chose this name to showcase that Avvaiyar was not one woman but many female poets who were given that title. Like Avvaiyar of the past, we are passionate about Thamizh and helping others embrace the language that has been so impactful in our lives. We started down this path not knowing what to expect and it has been an interesting journey but we're more excited than ever to see this book and Amutha come to life. We hope that Amutha becomes a household name and kids and adults alike embrace her and what she symbolizes into their lives.

Our Vision

Modernized

Our first book, அமுதா Loves to Read is aimed at being the first of a Tamil children’s book series that is accessible, relatable and inclusive in a world where representation matters. As a community, we are accustomed to accepting that our books are not on par with English books. With most existing Tamil books, our kids see amma making dosas in sarees and appa reading a newspaper in vetti. It’s simply not relatable to the Tamil diaspora. Instead, we want to showcase the realistic experiences of people living in the diaspora along with tackling issues of gender norms, colourism, intergenerational bonding, etc. Why does that matter? Because books are powerful. Children are influenced by what they see and read in books. Especially young children aged 0-5, whose screen time is often limited.

Share our passion

We are launching a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds for our first book during Tamil Heritage Month in January. We chose this symbolic month to remind ourselves of the importance of growing our language and having characters in our kids’ lives that they can relate to. As we work towards launching the book, we will be sharing background information on the characters and their experiences. If these stories impact you, please share your own stories with us and our stories with others so we can all feel seen and heard and have a sense of belonging. This is more important now than ever before as we work our way out of this pandemic.

Making Thamizh Fun

Our novel approach to teaching Thamizh is to make learning fun and interactive by introducing Thamizh words by categories. In our first book, the category is relationships and on each page, we introduce one word in Thamizh with the pronunciations in English below the word to make it appealing and accessible for non Thamizh readers as well. These words are woven into a simple story that is aimed to be engaging for young children ages 0-5. We will also have supplementary activities on our website which can be incorporated into story time to engage children of different ages.
